Partners and Project Structure

Connective Cities is a cooperation project of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the German Association of Cities (DST) and Engagement Global (EG) with its Service Agency Communities in One World (SKEW), which brings together supply and demand on urban development challenges worldwide for a tailored exchange of experience.

The cooperation project is carried out on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Connective Cities includes a Steering Committee and a Secretariat. The Steering Committee advises and decides by consensus on all strategic issues of Connective Cities. The Secretariat provides the operational internal and external services of Connective Cities, and the necessary support services.

Connective Cities has regional external structures in the focus regions of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Southeast Europe/Caucasus (SEE). Additionally, Connective Cities is also active in the regions of Asia and Latin America.

In Connective Cities, GIZ is primarily responsible for cooperation with international partners and organisations, as well as for the implementation of activities and the networking of municipal practitioners in the cooperation countries.

Service Agency Communities in One World (SKEW) of Engagement Global

The mission of Engagement Global is to promote and strengthen the development policy engagement of schools, associations, foundations, individuals, the private sector and civil society in Germany. SKEW is a division of Engagement Global and has been the competence center for municipal development policy on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and co-financing federal states since 2001. It informs, advises, networks, promotes, qualifies, and motivates municipal actors - target group-oriented, non-profit and free of charge.

SKEW focuses on municipal partnerships, fair trade and fair procurement, migration and development, and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda at the municipal level.

SKEW is responsible for activating German partners in Connective Cities for international exchange and coordinates the activities carried out in Germany.

German Association of Cities (DST)

The DST is an association of cities and municipalities in Germany. Numerous representatives of the now around 3,200 German member cities and municipalities are involved in the committees of the DST.

The DST represents the interests of all independent cities and most cities belonging to a district, is in dialogue with the Federal Government, the Bundestag, the Bundesrat, the European Union and numerous organizations, influences legislation and respects municipal self-government, which is guaranteed in the Basic Law. The DST advises its member cities, informs them about significant processes and promotes an active exchange between them.
