Sustainable Urban Development in south-East europe

Introductory Workshop of Connective Cities' Regional Network

On 2 December 2019, the Introductory Workshop of Connective Cities – the International Community of Practice for Sustainable Urban Development has been conducted in Tbilisi, Georgia. The event was held under the heading of Integrated Urban Development as one of the four thematic clusters of the project participated by more than 40 participants from cities and municipalities, government institutions, international donor organizations and field experts from Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The official addresses during the opening ceremony were delivered by the Attaché Department for Economics and Economic Cooperation of Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Georgia, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia and the Head of Municipal Service for Environmental Protection of Tbilisi City Hall stressing on the key features of the project and welcoming the activities of Connective Cities in South East European region.

Moderated by Mr. Felix Richter, other key inputs have been brought by a local urban practitioner on Integrated Urban Planning: Towards new operational framework and the Connective Cities Regional Network Coordinator presenting the main cursors of the project. On top of that, the Covenant of Mayors process in the East has been outlined for the participants and Batumi city show-case on Integrated Urban Transport Planning Practices and Challenges has further been presented.

Besides presenting the third phase of Connective Cities in South East Europe among the potential partners and key stakeholders, other key objectives of the workshop, inter alia, included:

  1. Figuring out key challenges and opportunities facing to integrated urban development in the region;
  2. Creating momentum for establishing the regional professional networking;
  3. Defining the thematic scope of the project and setting the scene for future targeted measures across the region.

In the course of the workshop three working groups have been formed by the participants discussing the potential topics for future regional events and project ideas. As a result of the working group discussions a wide variety of potential themes have been identified to be targeted throughout the entire running of the project:

  • Climate change mitigation and urban transport have been coined as key possible focus topics in South East Europe coupled with
  • support developing integrated Masterplans for cities and
  • facilitate refurbishment of existing municipal buildings with energy efficiency standards.

It has been acknowledged by a large number of stakeholders and municipal experts that the project seeks to build a network of urban practitioners, which will provide a systematic access to practice-oriented solutions for sustainable urban development by facilitating change and providing mutual support. It is envisaged that final workshop materials documenting the key deliverables of the workshop to be assembled and disseminated in a next few weeks.
