Delegation from Jordan

Study Tour and Project Workshop on Solid Waste Management for Jordanian municipalities

In the framework of the “Municipal know-how for host communities in the Middle East” Programme of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Connective Cities organised a Study Tour and Project Workshop on solid waste management from 27th – 31st March 2017 in various cities and locations in North Rhine Westphalia, Germany.

For the municipal experts on solid waste management both from Jordanian municipalities and municipal companies from Germany this visit was a direct continuation of the collaboration started during the Practitioners´ Workshops in Jordan on “Planning Integrated Solid Waste Management Solutions“ in May and November 2016.

The study tour for the Jordanian municipalities of Deir Alla, Irbid, Jerash, Karak, Madaba, Mafraq, Ramtha and Wasattyah led to various locations in North Rhine-Westphalia, such as a paper sorting station, a bulky waste sorting facility or a composting plant. The visit helped to deepen the participants’ knowledge on German examples and approaches in the specific fields of solid waste management that are crucial to the project ideas developed by the Jordanian municipalities.

During the connected project workshop German experts from municipal companies in Cologne, Donauwörth, Borgstedt, Castrop-Rauxel, Eschweiler, Hamburg and Jena joined the Jordanian delegation. In the course of the event, participants from municipalities in Jordan and their German colleagues worked on concrete project ideas that had been developed in previous Connective Cities events and which were discussed and further elaborated. Furthermore, information on support for collaboration opportunities between Jordanian and German municipalities was provided.

The developed projects focused on three topics: Planning integrated solid waste management, Composting and Sorting waste. All eight Jordanian municipalities developed specific and adapted solutions to improve their respective local waste management. Several bilateral cooperation projects between Jordanian municipalities and German municipal companies have been explored and first concrete steps were agreed.
