On 9th August 2021, the Climate change/Climate proof urban development working group under the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) Network of the International City Platform Connective Cities had a virtual kick-off session. The session attracted urban practitioners both from within the region and internationally working in local governments, national government, NGOs and the private sector.
To kick-off the exchange of knowledge within the group, the session involved insightful inputs from Evans Gichana (Director Climate Change- Kisumu County, Kenya) on the climate actions that have been undertaken by Kisumu County and Pedro Muradás (Head of Urban Climate Planning in IDOM, Spanish multinational consultancy firm) on a project IDOM had previously been contracted for on mainstreaming climate adaptation in Mozambican urban water, sanitation and drainage sector with Beira and Matola selected as pilot cities for the project.
Some highlights from the discussions held after the presentations include how legislators disrupt the development of policy and legal framework when they delay approving the drafted policy documents which can be linked to the lack of awareness by the community on climate change making such agendas less appealing to politicians. There were also discussions on the promotion of no-regret options in addressing climate change such as Nature-based solutions and the use of digital tools to do disaster risk assessments and modelling to improve disaster predictions for better reactions.
The session was concluded with an agreement that the working group was a good opportunity to learn different approaches and legislations developed to address issues on climate change and the participants were interested in other similar exchanges with other cities. Climate change is a global issue and lessons can be learned from shared mitigation experiences.
Look out for the report of this event to be published soon.
