Community-based Solid Waste Management in Nairobi
Local project workshop, 25. - 27. January 2017, Nairobi, Kenya
The Nairobi City County and Connective Cities, the international Community of Practice for sustainable urban development, conducted a local project workshop on “Community-based Solid Waste Management in Nairobi” from 25 to 27 January 2017 to exchange experience and elaborate an enriched action plan for the local project on “Strengthening capacity of CBO´s in Solid Waste Management in Nairobi City County: The case of Lang´ata sub-county”.
Apart from the broad representation of participants from the different sub-counties and the city county of Nairobi, urban practitioners of Solid Waste Management from Harare/Zimbabwe, Ho/Ghana, Johannesburg/South Africa and Berlin/Germany were invited.
On the first day of the workshop the focus was on understanding and analyzing the current situation of Solid Waste Management in Nairobi with a specific focus on cooperation with Community-Based Organizations (CBOs). During the excursion to the sub-county Lang´ata participants had the opportunity to speak with the members of the youth group Tegemeo in an informal settlement, which is involved in the collection and separation of solid waste in an area, which is inaccessible for normal waste trucks. This excursion provided a detailed picture of the challenges the community-based organizations involved in SWM face and how the cooperation with the city county of Nairobi works.
On the second day the learning exchange on the basis of good practices of the international practitioners gave an insight into approaches used by the participating cities in respect to the collaboration with community-based organizations, the value chains of solid waste streams and financing models. An extraction of lessons learnt which are applicable in the Nairobi context built the basis for action planning of the local project.
During the joint action planning on the third day the participants refined objectives and results of the project on “Strengthening capacity of CBO´s in Solid Waste Management in Nairobi City County: The case of Lang´ata sub-county”. They worked on roles and responsibilities of the different actors, and necessary governance structures, corresponding intervention areas and activities.
From the results of the workshop it is clearly notable that the lessons provided by international experiences enriched the local project planning in manifold aspects like the cooperation model between the city county government and the CBOs, the capacity building approach, the registration process of CBOs, opportunities of recycling and many more.
The local working group plans to use the inputs of the workshop to elaborate a comprehensive project matrix and plan of operation.
