Connective Cities
NEWSLETTER - Edition No. 84, Mai 2025

Dear readers,

In this issue, we are pleased to be able to showcase various paths for a robust, adaptive and sustainable city.

The exchange between German and African experts revealed the great potential of green hydrogen for local economic development. Various approaches from Africa and Europe, especially Germany, were shown, demonstrating that municipalities can benefit from hydrogen as an energy source in vastly different ways. The example of Arandis-Namibia showed how a municipality in Namibia was able to become one of the leading hydrogen producers in Southern Africa with targeted investments. The example from the Heilbronn region in Germany showed how a region can focus more on the utilisation of green hydrogen, rather than the production of it. Both regions have regional strategies and master plans to attract suppliers and technology providers, together with the pure hydrogen producers and create regional supply and value chains, leading to dynamic economic development with high employment effects.

Our activities on Voluntary Local and Subnational Reviews, showcased how the implementation of the Agenda 2030 at a local level can be accelerated, through the cases presented by experts from South Africa and Germany.

Scientific methods and findings can provide significant support in climate adaptation, such as the avoidance of heat islands - Dr Jürgen Koop from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research explained in three learning units what procedures are available and how enabling environments can be created by cities, to take up measures that combat heat islands.

And, of course, we would like to invite you to take part in further expert discussions:

To the presentation of the pilot projects of the Connective Cities Deep Dive learning process ‘Heat in the City’’; to the discussion of concrete project ideas for the use of renewable energies at municipal level in South-East Europe and the Caucasus; to an open exchange of experiences on increasing transparency and public participation using digital tools; and last but not least, on strategies on how Ukrainian municipalities can strengthen their resilience as part of their sustainable urban development.

We wish you inspiring reading
