NEWSLETTER - EDITION No. 45, February 2022
|
|
|
Dear Readers,
digitalisation is playing an increasingly important role in sustainable urban development - and can also be key to recovery from the pandemic. In this issue, we offer you a series of insights and good practices that document the creative digital approaches of municipalities around the world: they range from digitilisation of public services, crisis management, fleet management of municipal vehicles, early detection of forest fires, citizen participation, urban planning, tourism to an interactive and gamified experience of waste separation thanks to an app.
The second focus of this newsletter issue is on the green and social dimensions of urban development: Gender-sensitive planning and urban mobility, awareness raising on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), biodiversity and environmental protection as well as social entrepreneurship.
We also invite you to take part in one of our upcoming events. Read our outlook section to find out what we are planning for you in the next few weeks.
We look forward to your participation,
your Connective Cities Team

"Firewatch" – State-of-the-art technology for early forest fire detection
|
Both the frequency and intensity of forest fires are increasing worldwide as a result of climate change. If they get out of control, they can put human lives at risk and cause long-term damage to the ecosystem. To minimise this danger, the Lower Saxony State Forests have introduced an innovative system for the early detection of forest fires.

Following a participatory waste and citizens' forum, the municipality managed to introduce effective safety measures so that only 1% of all workers in the waste sector caught Covid-19 while working.

Planning by doing – Tactical Urbanism during the COVID-19 pandemic
|
Have you ever heard of tactical urbanism? During the pandemic, many cities set up temporary low-budget solutions such as pop-up bike lanes, turned pavement into plazas and used better block initiatives to adapt urban space to the new requirements. In our Insight Session, experts in tactical urbanism share good practices from their work and explain how your city can benefit from this experimental low-budget approach.
