Connective Cities
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE FOR SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT
NEWSLETTER - EDITION No. 56, January 2023

Dear Readers,

This issue of our newsletter focuses on different aspects of sustainable urban development in crisis and war situations. We look back at a virtual expert exchange on construction waste management in crisis areas, provide insights into improving quality of life in the occupied Gaza Strip as well as making river corridors in Durban more resilient to heavy rainfall.

You may consider becoming a member of our „Municipal Resilience in Wartime“ working group or joining our dialogue event on „Planning Evacuations Beyond Their Early Stages“ in March.

In addition, we present a promising project initiated by Connective Cities for the establishment of an umbrella organization for the approximately 300 informal waste pickers in the Serbian city of Mitrovica.

How can construction waste disposal be managed as effectively as possible and, moreover, how can building materials be reused with a view to future reconstruction? This question was addressed by 30 experts from 12 municipalities, mainly from Ukraine and Germany, who also reported on their experiences in the context of the flood disaster in the Ahr valley in June 2021 and the current war situation in Ukraine.
