Connective Cities
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE FOR SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT
NEWSLETTER - EDITION No. 65, October 2023

Dear readers

On the cover of this month’s edition of the Connective Cities Newsletter is the green landscape of Zhytomyr, Ukraine, with its pedestrian bridge, crossing the Teteriv River. This image symbolizes the central themes of this newsletter: the importance of climate-friendly, nature-based solutions and protecting cities from disasters and wars, in realizing sustainable integrated urban development.

We look back at the three-day kick-off event focusing on the potential of renewable energy for local economic development in Nairobi, Kenya; the insight session on the role of green urban heat islands; and lastly, our workshop on strengthening the economic resilience of Ukrainian municipalities.

Learn how the municipality of Grafschaft quickly and unbureaucratically provided mid-term housing to survivors of the flooding disaster in the Ahr Valley.

We would also like to invite you to a discussion on how marginalized populations in cities can be better protected from future disasters.

In November, Connective Cities will be represented at the German-Ukrainian Municipal Partnership Conference 2023 with its own expert forum: "Integrated Urban Development for Reconstruction: Planning and Implementation".

We wish you a happy reading!

Ahr Valley: Municipality gives flood victims temporary accommodation in 25 tiny houses
Good practice on successfully pooling resources and competences after emergency situations

135 people lost their lives, more than 800 were injured and around 9,000 houses were severely damaged during the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley, Germany, in July 2021. Temporary shelters had to be provided for the people who could no longer stay in their own homes. The municipality of Grafschaft, a charity organization and the private sector quickly pooled their resources and expertise to organize 25 tiny houses for temporary use for around 100 flood victims. Find out how!

Protecting the vulnerable from urban disaster risk
Join us at our virtual Insight Session on 26 October 2023, 13:00 - 14:00 (CEST)!

Disasters disproportionately affect marginalized population groups like the elderly, children, the disabled, and low-income households. How do we make sure that no one is left behind? How do we distribute resources equitably to ensure that all segments of society are reached? How do we effectively build resilient communities that empower and protect the most vulnerable?
