Connective Cities
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE FOR SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT
NEWSLETTER - EDITION No. 70, March 2024

Dear readers,

"Sustainable urban renewal" and "resilience" are the core topics of the March issue of our newsletter.

Our international dialogue event, "Climate-friendly construction with organic and recycled materials", held in November 2023 in collaboration with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, was very well received. We are also examining Lörrach's plan to become the first German city to develop an entire industrial estate using timber on a former factory site. Furthermore, we will delve deeper into this topic at the regional level: We cordially invite interested municipal experts to the kick-off event of the working group "Sustainable and Affordable Housing in Sub-Saharan Africa", scheduled to take place in Windhoek, Namibia, at the beginning of June.

"Resilience" encompasses various facets, such as   in the realm of  “smart cities”, enabling swift, data-driven responses to changing environments, and in urban climate management to mitigate heat islands. For example, in Ukraine, we explore how sustainable integrated urban development can progress in times of war. We offer insights into the associated challenges as well as potential solutions through our international expert exchanges, such as our intensive "Deep Dive" learning process.

In this context, we extend invitations to two upcoming events: Today, on 19 March 2024 from 16:00 to 17:00 CET we will host a virtual Insight Session titled "Nature-based solutions, biomimetics and flood management".  On 24 April, we will conduct another virtual session during which we will showcase the "Amman Urban Observatory".

We hope you find our content inspiring.

Lörrach plans Germany’s first timber-built commercial area
A climate-neutral and sustainable commercial area is taking shape on the site of the Lauffenmühle, a former textiles factory.

In 2020, the city of Lörrach purchased the 8.5-hectare Lauffenmühle site, a former textile factory. Following discussions with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the idea was born to build a climate-neutral industrial estate in timber construction on the site.
