Dear Readers,
Former US Vice President, Albert ‘Al’ Gore once remarked, with a touch of cynicism, "If we don’t have a planet, the economy won’t do well." This statement serves as a reminder that the social and ecological dimensions of sustainability are the foundation of our existence.
Cities around the world are currently working on the development and implementation of sustainability strategies, however, for smaller and less resourceful municipalities, this can often be a significant challenge.
In this issue, we explore various approaches and strategy elements: La Unión in Costa Rica has successfully developed a strategy to reduce plastic waste, while Amman in Jordan leverages a comprehensive database for fact-based planning. In the MENA region, strategies are being developed to bring more women into municipal leadership positions, and in sub-Saharan Africa, a new working group has formed to integrate sustainable and affordable housing into municipal planning.
Additionally, we present local solutions for better managing heatwaves in cities, highlight renewable energy options in Southeast Europe, and feature Dr. Anwaar Bani Salman, Head of the Planning and Research Department of Kufranja Municipality in Jordan, who will explain her strategy on agritourism and ecotourism.
We warmly invite you to our dialogue event from December 2-4 in Berlin, where we will engage in a deep exchange on sustainability reporting.
We wish you an inspiring read.
