Connective Cities’ working group ‘Local development strategies’ is supporting municipalities in the MENA region to embark on their process of local strategic planning. With the aim of formulating local development strategies, this process involves data collection, engagement with community stakeholders, collaboration between municipal departments and accurate needs assessment. Data collection in particular has been identified as a major impediment in devising local development strategies that respond to the current needs of the local communities. Taking the first steps towards establishing up-to-date robust municipal database presents an opportunity for making informed planning decisions that are evidence-based.

To this end, the session held on 22nd July 2024 showcased good practices from the GIS directorate at the Greater Amman Municipality which provides a plethora of digital services that are key for local strategic planning as well as master planning. Besides the traditional services related to geospatial mapping and analysis, the services of the GIS directorate include:

  • Amman Explorer:  a website with an interactive map that utilizes a geo-server and a geo-database allowing users to visualize addresses on a map, self-locate, and to use google maps navigation by simply entering a street and building number.
  • Tourist Routes: A website for identifying tourist trails
  • Amman Portal: A system to search for all geographical information
  • Bus rapid transit (BRT): A system for locating BRT routes and displaying the cost
  • Public transportation: A system that identifies all public transportation routes

Additionally, the participants have also learned about the statistical data that the Department of Statistics (DoS) collects, verifies and publishes, which is fundamental to formulating the local strategies at the municipal level. Linking the municipal observatory to the DoS database was suggested as a means for populating the municipal database with up-to-date statistical data.
