Connective Cities
NEWSLETTER - EDITION NO. 25, March 2019

Dear readers,

Shortly before the end of the 2nd phase of Connective Cities, we asked urban practitioners who had participated in the dialogue and learning processes of the Platform to tell us about the processes of change in their cities.

We are both impressed and encouraged by the many responses we received to continue our course: In many cases, very concrete learning experiences were made - for example in technical questions, in aspects of process design and participation or the consideration of inclusion and equality - which supported the intended change processes. Above all, the peer-to-peer exchange of experience and the mutual consultation on applied approaches to solutions were highly appreciated.

The follow-up measure, which will begin in April, will continue along this path and seek your continued support!

We are looking forward to the beginning of the 3rd phase and wish you an exciting reading,

Your Connective Cities Team

Pearls on String - Revitalisation of the Old Town of Chiang Mai, Thailand
Municipal experts from Bremen and Mannheim and a local planning team developed a sustainable mobility concept from 9 to 11 January 2019

The result of the workshop is the concept "Pearls on String". Participants identified points of interest for tourists in the old town, which are to be linked together on pedestrian and bicycle-friendly routes. In addition, a number of approaches to traffic planning such as access restrictions for individual traffic, an attractive road design and the promotion of electric mobility were discussed.

Integration of Refugees and social cohesion
Study Tour and Project Workshop in Berlin, from 12 to 15 February 2019

The integration of refugees poses a challenge both in Turkey and Germany. How urban practitioners address these challenges was the subject of an exchange and working programme which gathered 9 Turkish and 8 German municipalities in Berlin.  "We don't just want to learn, we also want to make a difference," says Angelika Schöttler, mayor of the Tempelhof-Schönberg district.

Right of Way for Green Commuters in Belo Horizonte
How the city of Belo Horizonte in Brazil is moving towards more sustainable urban mobility

As Brazil's third-largest metropolitan region, Belo Horizonte developed a plan to promote sustainable mobility as well as public health - in a Brazilian way: Since 2014, more than 50 kilometres of cycle paths have been built, 30 km/h zones established and the road design changed. Bloco da Bicicletinha, a popular group of costumed cyclists, brings colour and new practices to carnival. Street art and cultural events celebrate cycling and polo on the bike became a new sport.

NEW NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES WITH CONNECTIVE CITIES - WORLDWIDE
CONNECTIVE CITIES PLANS A WORLDWIDE PRACTITIONER NETWORK WITH REGIONAL GROUPS AND ACTIVITIES

In the new project phase starting in April 2019, Connective Cities will also support the networking of local practitioners - in addition to the events within the framework of the learning processes. The aim is to create an opportunity for practitioners to continue to advise each other beyond the specific single events. From the regional groups of the network, experiences and municipal interests should also be brought into regional and international processes and events. The networks are regionally structured but internationally linked and will be cross-cutting. In the course of the development of the regional groups we will inform about the next steps here. We look forward to the commitment of the experts who have already been active in Connective Cities and of new interested local practitioners.
