Connective Cities
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE FOR SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT
NEWSLETTER - EDITION No. 50, July 2022

Dear readers,

urban and peri-urban agriculture is becoming increasingly important. Especially in challenging times, it can contribute to food security, but also to economic recovery, environmental education, greenhouse gas reduction and clean energy production through biogas plants. We address the topic of urban gardening by sharing experiences from Maputo, Mozambique and Madaba, Jordan. "Urban Food Security in Times of Crisis" is also the focus of our next online event on July 27. We would be delighted if you could join us!

We are also looking at the impact of climate change. One of our network's working groups intensively addressed questions on integrated sustainable infrastructures and another on how to better assess external risks in urban development. Our new program, which we presented at the World Urban Forum (WUF11), is designed to help municipalities find quick and flexible responses to urban challenges – whether pandemics, climate crises or wars.

Cities around the world have demonstrated that they can find creative solutions in times of crisis. Approaches to tactical urbanism are resulting in inspiring projects like pop-up bike lanes in Bogotá or more colorful, livable streets in Belo Horizonte. Broad citizen participation is often central to the successful implementation of new urban development projects and helps making public spaces more inclusive – as is evident in the Medina of Tunis.

We hope you find inspiration from our latest news!

Safe, colorful and livable streets and squares in Belo Horizonte, Brazil
