Connective Cities
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE FOR SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT
NEWSLETTER - EDITION No. 53, October 2022

Dear readers,

Making cities more crisis-proof, eco-friendly and socially responsible - this is how the reviews and insight articles in this newsletter issue can be summed up: the Lebanese municipality of Ras El-Matin preserves Beirut's "green lungs" through ecotourism projects while boosting the local economy. Municipalities in the QuattroPole network of cities effectively support each other in times of crisis. Our latest good practices demonstrate how the metropolises of Bangkok and Vienna combine climate-friendly and social approaches in their urban development strategies.

We kicked off this year's Urban October 2022@GIZ  programme with a variety of formats and topics. You are very welcome to participate until 2 November. We also cordially invite our community of experts to share their experiences in two Connective Cities events: "Construction Waste Management in Crisis Areas" and "Rainwater and Heavy Rainwater Management in Water-Sensitive Urban Planning".

Get inspired!

Voices from Connective Cities - Muncipality of Ras el-Matn

The mayor of the Lebanese municipality of Ras el-Matn explains how the municipality serves as the green lung of the capital Beirut, mainly due to its extensive ecotourism projects. Examples of public-private partnerships from different countries such as the Philippines and Brazil, shared through the Connective Cities network, inspired his personal engagement.

It was awarded the special prize of the Carl and Anneliese Goerdeler Foundation.

Living alongside water instead of fearing it
Bangkok's new Chulalongkorn Centenary Park

The park provides a recreational space for the nearby neighbourhoods and at the same time contributes to climate change mitigation. It is a good example for a sustainable landscape strategy that mitigates urban flooding and improves the city's resilience towards living with water - rather than fearing it - in the face of climate change.
