Connective Cities
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE FOR SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT
NEWSLETTER - EDITION No. 61, June 2023

Dear readers,

In this issue, we look back on a series of inspiring events in Sub-Sahara Africa and the Middle East on the current topics of "localizing the SDGs", "climate protection,", "flood management," and "energy self-sufficiency".

For the first time, we are focusing on the topic of "Cooperation between Science and the City", firstly through a Good Practice from Heidelberg and secondly in the context of a virtual discussion event.

We also give you an insight into Hagen's innovative concept of tree trenches to better protect the city from heavy rain and heat.

Last but not least, German municipalities can now apply again for financial support for their partnership work under the funding instrument "Partnership Projects for Sustainable Local Development" (NAKOPA) at the Service Agency Communities in One World.

We wish you an interesting read.

Tree trenches for quality of life in the City of Hagen
More protection against heavy rain and heat, improved air quality and biodiversity

With the Ruhr, Volme, Lenne, and Ennepe, four rivers flow through the urban area of Hagen. As a result, large parts of the city are at risk of flooding, especially during heavy rain events. As part of a pilot project, specially developed, innovative tree trenches are now being planted. They are intended to make the city safer, more climate-resilient, and therefore more liveable.

Win-win: municipalities and the academic community benefit from more collaboration
Findings from a virtual Connective Cities ad hoc event

Closer cooperation between municipalities and scientific institutions offers both sides great potential for development, which has often not yet been fully exploited. At the invitation of the city of Heidelberg and Connective Cities, participants from Germany, Jordan, Kenya, Somalia, Indonesia, Tanzania, France, Congo (DRC), and the Ukraine came together to discuss this topic. The documentation summarizes the essential findings.
