Connective Cities
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE FOR SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT
NEWSLETTER - EDITION No. 63, August 2023

Dear readers,

this issue focuses on people and social cohesion at the local level. We look back at a three-day workshop on gender-sensitive urban development in the MENA region, a discussion on forms of citizen participation and cooperative urban development at the Mannheim Urban Development Symposium, and a virtual session on the special role of spontaneous helpers in disaster events.

And as always, we'll also provide some deeper insights: how Dresden and Brazzaville are promoting urban gardening and learning from each other in the process, how Kotor in Montenegro is reaching out to the LGBTQIA+ community and benefiting itself in the process, and how municipalities in Jordan, Tunisia, Palestine, and Kenya are planning concrete actions for "cool" cities and relying on citizen participation as well.

We would be delighted to see your participation in our upcoming events which include Our side event at the African Climate Summit 2023, on "Flood Protection and Municipal Preparedness", or our next virtual workshop on "Supporting Economic Resilience of Ukrainian Municipalities", which promotes the municipal exchange between Germany and Ukraine. For all those who are interested in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals at the local level, we recommend an interactive and practice-oriented workshop in September on the topic.

Get inspired and join us!

Organised volunteers and spontaneous helpers: their special role in disaster management
Follow-up to a one-day virtual workshop on coordinating volunteers in the event of a disaster on 5 June 2023

Volunteers and spontaneous helpers have great potential for responding to disaster events. They are quickly ready for action and often have a very relevant knowledge of local conditions. In our virtual workshop, we looked at practical examples from Istanbul and Dortmund to explore how volunteers can be best deployed without hindering the work of disaster management professionals.

Dresden and Brazzaville embrace urban gardening
Two major cities acknowledge the considerable sustainability potential of urban fruit and vegetable gardens

The two partner municipalities Dresden and Brazzaville have long been interested in how urban gardening can help foster sustainable development while addressing people’s direct food needs. With the education project "One child – one planter", the Congolese capital is endeavouring to link environmental education with gardening and food production in schools. Dresden's four-hectare urban gardens promote a better urban climate and increase the biodiversity in the city. Dresden also wants to promote its status as an "edible city". Let the two cities inspire you!
