Join us at our side event "Flood Risk Management, the essential role of cities and importance of municipal preparedness", at the African Climate Summit 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya taking place on 5 September 2023 from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. EAT.

By the year 2100, coastal flooding in cities from sea-level rise will affect between 158–510 million people and expose USD 7.9–12.7 billion of infrastructural assets to flood damage. With the trends in urbanization seen today, emissions, populations, finance, infrastructure, and vulnerability to climate risks are being concentrated in urban areas. Cities and urban regions are both key locations for innovation, climate mitigation, adaptation, and climate resilient development.

Our side event highlights the essential role of cities and the importance of municipal preparedness and aims to bring attention to the importance of cities in combating climate change. For our panel discussion, we will be joined by the following:

  • H.E Benjamin Chesire Cheboi - Govenor of Baringo County, Kenya
  • Ms. Chilando Nakalima chitangala - Mayor of Lusaka, Zambia, and Vice-chairperson of the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoMSSA)
  • Mr. Andreas Wolter - Mayor of Cologne, Germany
  • Mr. Enock Tumbo - Environmental Management Office, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Moderated by Professor Johannes Belle - Disaster Management Training and Education Center for Africa, Bloemfontein, South Africa
