Connective Cities
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE FOR SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT
NEWSLETTER - Editon No. 72, May 2024

Dear readers,

‘A crisis can be a productive situation. You just have to take away the flavour of disaster.’

The spirit of this quote from the writer Max Frisch is largely reflected in this issue of the newsletter’s focus on resilience -  the ability of communities and cities to withstand crises or disasters without permanent impairment. How can municipalities be made more resilient - on both a technical and social level?

We show concrete examples of how mining industries can be transformed in a more climate-friendly and economically sustainable way and how low-carbon housing can be promoted. We have established a working group in the MENA region that is committed to creating a favourable environment in which women can play an active, productive, and leading role in community and local governance.

We provide insights into an innovative, participatory methodology using the example of the city of Garowe in Somalia to support climate-smart urban development and highlight regional learning experiences in Southeast Europe/Caucasus on how to promote renewable energy there.

We would also like to invite you to our upcoming events. Across two virtual insight sessions, we explore the concept of sponge city and its implementation potentials in cities in Sub-Saharan Africa, and secondly the potential of artificial intelligence for risk-based urban development and climate protection in the SADC region. We would also like to invite all German and international experts who are involved in the reuse of older public buildings to apply for our three-day dialogue event in Berlin in September by the end of June.

Last but not least, the ‘’Municipality Moves the World‘’, competition is taking place again this year, for which all cities, municipalities and districts in Germany can apply with their development policy profile by the end of May.

We wish you inspiring reading

Promoting Sustainable Mining Industries
Review of the Insight Session on 23 April 2024

What are the challenges and opportunities in promoting sustainable mining industries and what crucial role do cities play in promoting positive change in this sector? This question was at the centre of the expert exchange, which was stimulated by five practical examples from Germany and Georgia.

Women’s leadership in municipalities
Experiences from Tunisia and Morocco

Tunisia, once a pioneer and example of equal representation for women, dissolved the country's democratically elected municipal councils in March 2023. In Morocco, the political participation of women is promoted through legal and institutional measures. Against this background, Connective Cities is launching a working group committed to creating a favourable environment in which women can play an active, productive and leading role in municipal and local governance.

Climate-positive cities: circular economy and carbon accounting
How the construction sector can reduce CO2 emissions to make cities more climate-positive

Here are two examples that demonstrate how low-carbon construction can be achieved: Firstly, the city of Thimphu in Bhutan has outlined a vision of synergies between sustainable forestry and a robust construction sector in its 2023-2048 Structure Plan. Secondly, the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) has a certification system for sustainable construction that takes into account the entire life cycle of a building and the character of a construction project. Inspiring!

A Strategy for Climate-Sensitive Urban Development in Garowe, Somalia
From Local Climate Change Assessment to Concrete Urban Initiatives

Connective Cities has supported the development of a bottom-up strategy for climate-resilient urban development, known as the Climate-Sensitive City Development Strategy (CSCD). This involved a participatory methodology for identifying and analyzing key entry points for municipal action. Garowe was the first pilot project where this methodology and the design of the CSCD strategy were tested. We are pleased to present this strategy to you here.

Enhancing Renewable Energy Solutions
Regional Learning Experiences in Southeast Europe/Caucasus

As the world transitions to a more sustainable future, municipalities in South East Europe and the Caucasus are actively seeking innovative solutions to meet their energy needs. In this context, Connective Cities has organised two peer-to-peer exchange activities as part of a regional learning process on renewable energy options at municipal level.

2nd Hands on Public Buildings
Call for participation in the dialogue event on the reuse of modernist public buildings from the 1960s and 1970s from 24 to 26 September 2024

The reuse of existing buildings enables cities around the world to continue using the grey energy bound up in concrete and steel in a sustainable and economically efficient way. The goal of an emission-free construction sector is currently leading to this paradigm shift. The aim of the event is to present good practices, exchange innovative approaches, identify challenges and jointly develop solution strategies. Application deadline: 30.06.2024, indicating a project.
