Dear readers,
‘A crisis can be a productive situation. You just have to take away the flavour of disaster.’
The spirit of this quote from the writer Max Frisch is largely reflected in this issue of the newsletter’s focus on resilience - the ability of communities and cities to withstand crises or disasters without permanent impairment. How can municipalities be made more resilient - on both a technical and social level?
We show concrete examples of how mining industries can be transformed in a more climate-friendly and economically sustainable way and how low-carbon housing can be promoted. We have established a working group in the MENA region that is committed to creating a favourable environment in which women can play an active, productive, and leading role in community and local governance.
We provide insights into an innovative, participatory methodology using the example of the city of Garowe in Somalia to support climate-smart urban development and highlight regional learning experiences in Southeast Europe/Caucasus on how to promote renewable energy there.
We would also like to invite you to our upcoming events. Across two virtual insight sessions, we explore the concept of sponge city and its implementation potentials in cities in Sub-Saharan Africa, and secondly the potential of artificial intelligence for risk-based urban development and climate protection in the SADC region. We would also like to invite all German and international experts who are involved in the reuse of older public buildings to apply for our three-day dialogue event in Berlin in September by the end of June.
Last but not least, the ‘’Municipality Moves the World‘’, competition is taking place again this year, for which all cities, municipalities and districts in Germany can apply with their development policy profile by the end of May.
We wish you inspiring reading Your Connective Cites Team
