Connective Cities and the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing Berlin invite urban practitioners to the dialogue event on the reuse of modernist buildings from the 60s and 70s to be held from 24 to 26 September 2024 in Berlin, Germany.
The reuse of existing buildings enables cities worldwide to save grey energy bound in concrete and steel in a sustainable and economically efficient way. While in most cases demolition and reconstruction has been the answer at the end of a building’s lifespan, the current goal to create an emission free construction sector is lately leading to a paradigm shift. In the 60s and 70s, many public buildings were built using a flexible construction method, which is why they can be adapted to respond to today’s needs.
The event is geared towards German and international municipal actors working on different aspects of the reuse of modernist buildings. The aim of the event is to present good practice examples, exchange ideas on innovative approaches, identify challenges and jointly develop solution strategies.
