Connective Cities
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE FOR SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT
NEWSLETTER - EDITION No. 60, May 2023

Dear Readers,

Round tables and platforms such as Connective Cities, which bring together actors from different sectors, play a special role in managing urban transformation processes and strengthening resilience, especially in times of crisis and emergencies. This is the conclusion of a recent OECD study on Germany's decentralised development cooperation. The extensive engagement of municipalities is explicitly being commended there.

Strengthened by this analysis, we also take a look at a variety of approaches in this issue: Smart technologies in public transport in Lutsk, Ukraine; the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to promote the digitalisation of municipal services; the rehabilitation of poorer neighbourhoods in Rio de Janeiro, and a partnership to promote tourism and the local economy between the Jordanian municipality of Madaba and Rietberg in Germany.

In addition, we cordially invite you to further expert dialogues: On "Volunteering in Disaster Management" as well as on "Democracy of the City. Open society and normativity in urban development". In addition, we will put the experiences with our exchange formats up for discussion in another event ourselves.

Let us inspire you and join in!

Urban democracy. Open society and normativity in urban development
Call for participation – Expert Dialogue in cooperation with the City of Mannheim, Germany, 13 – 14 July 2023

Today, we often encounter life plans that go beyond the nuclear family and the so-called 'traditional path'. The land-use plans of urban planners, the floor plans of architects, and the standard procedures for participation, have not kept pace with complex societal developments that began quite some time ago. How can planners today conceptualise change and enable transformation? How can they develop structures for a collaborative planning culture? Join the discussion!
