As part of the Mannheim Symposium on Practice spaces for the open society – Prospects for a cooperative planning culture, in cooperation with the City of Mannheim, Connective Cities – the international community of practice for sustainable urban development – is organising an expert dialogue on the topic Urban democracy. Open society and normativity in urban development. This event will take place on 13 and 14 July 2023.

The conference is aimed at German and international experts from municipalities and utility companies, as well as experts from business, civil society and academia, who are working on the development of a new and collaborative planning culture. This planning culture is a strategic approach to tackling future social challenges in cities.

Today, we often encounter life plans that go beyond the nuclear family and the so-called 'traditional path'. The land-use plans of urban planners and the floor plans of architects, and the standard procedures for participation, have not kept pace with complex societal developments that began quite some time ago. How can planners today conceptualise change and enable transformation? How can they develop structures for a collaborative planning culture? And how can they create experimental spaces to explore the interface between planning and real life in new ways? What spaces does the open society need?
