Organized volunteering and the organization of spontaneous helpers

In disaster management, organized volunteering and the organization of spontaneous helpers is of great importance. When natural disasters or other emergencies occur, rapid action is required to alleviate the suffering of those affected and minimize the impact of the disaster. In these situations, volunteers can play an important role in supporting professional rescue workers and improving crisis management.

However, in order for organized volunteering and the organization of spontaneous helpers in disaster management to be successful, municipalities must consider a few things. For example, they need to create appropriate structures to mobilise volunteers and coordinate their work. The education and training of volunteers is also important to ensure smooth cooperation with the professional rescue workers and to minimize dangerous situations.

In addition, municipalities must attach great importance to the work of volunteers. Volunteers often make an indispensable contribution in emergencies and deserve thanks and recognition for it. At the same time, however, the boundaries and responsibilities of volunteers must be clearly defined to ensure safe and successful cooperation.

Organized volunteering and the organization of spontaneous helpers in disaster management is a complex challenge that can only be mastered through good planning and coordination – and that in advance. Successful collaboration between full-time rescue workers and volunteers can help save lives and minimize the impact of disasters.

In the online event on the topic of "Volunteering in Disaster Management", Connective Cities would like to discuss together with municipal experts from all over the world how structures can be created for organized volunteering and the organization of spontaneous helpers and what needs to be taken into account in planning.

At the start of the event, Axel Schmidt (Arbeiter Samariter Bund, Sphere Trainer) will give an input on the topic "Volunteering and spontaneous helpers as an expression of empathy & solidarity - using the bottom-up energy of spontaneous helpers and existing capacities".

Subsequently, Mr. Yusuf Doğan GÜRER (Deputy Director of European Side Fire Operations Directorate) from Istanbul will give an insight into how to deal with spontaneous helpers followed by Ms. Dr.-Ing. Sylvia Pratzler-Wanczura (scientific director) and Ms. Katharina Timm (managing director of the crisis team) of the Dortmund Fire Department who will report on their experiences and the challenges with organized volunteering.

Following the presentations, participants are invited to share experiences from their municipalities and discuss challenges in an open discussion.

The working language of the event is English.
