In order to address the issue “How can we improve mobility and air quality in our cities?”, 25 urban mobility practitioners from 5 Latin American countries met in Bogotá, Colombia, from the 17th – 19th June. The aim of this event was to learn mutually from experiences and Good Practices of other cities and jointly launch sustainable mobility projects.

The experiences of the 12 Good Practices that were presented ranged from campaign-based or locally limited traffic restrictions (e.g. the car-free day in Bogota, Colombia or the environmental zone in Toluca, Mexico) to the approaches of cross-institutional individual commissions with various groups of actors (e.g. the clean air initiative in Lima and Callao, Peru). Individual examples of promoting cycling were also contributed. The German examples from Leipzig, Stuttgart and the City and Region of Frankfurt complemented experiences with the impacts of environmental zones, regional approaches in promoting cycling, organisational development aspects in amalgamating transport companies and the management of mobility demand.
In the context of an excursion, the host city of Bogotá presented various experiences: promoting cycling (cycling routes), the Transmilenio rapid transport bus system, hybrid bus operating and traffic restriction campaigns. During this excursion, the participants had the opportunity to try out the bicycles for hire and the cycle paths in Bogotá.
The participants made intensive use of the opportunity to communicate and to engage in mutual learning and consulting thanks to participative methods such as the Gallery of Good Practices, Practitioner Corners and Peer Consulting.
Nine projects for further cross-border cooperation were identified during the event, three of which could already be prepared during the course of it: the “environmental zone” project, the “day without a car” project and the “planning of integrated sustainable transport systems” project. Now the highly motivated groups of participants are seeking to work together on these projects and strengthen their efforts to promote sustainable mobility with mutual support. Here, the emphasis is on many small steps to convince the relevant actors as well as on the short-term planning and implementing of small measures addressing comprehensive business policy visions and plans and hence the transformation of the transport system with a sustainable overall concept.
