Connective Cities Practitioners' Workshop

From Waste to Resource – Planning for Integrated Solid Waste Management in Sub-Saharan African Cities

Solid Waste Management (SWM) is a vital municipal service related to public health, environment, climate, economic development and income generation. In the face of increasing waste quantities, caused by population growth and changing consumption patterns, many Sub-Saharan African cities struggle to provide their citizens with adequate SWM services. During Connective Cities’ first regional dialogue event in Sub-Saharan Africa, SWM was confirmed as an issue of high concern to the participating cities. In response to this, Connective Cities offers a follow-up workshop, which will gather practitioners from local administrations, civil society and private sector to exchange on successful SWM practices, explore city-specific causes for and effects of insufficient SWM systems, advise each other and create local action plans. Addressing the concept of Integrated Sustainable Solid Waste Management (ISWM), the workshop deals with SWM in a comprehensive manner that includes both physical and governance dimensions along the four main functions of Municipal SWM: prevention/reduction, collection, reuse/recycling/recovery and disposal. Acknowledging the complexity and variety of SWM practices, the workshop does not present universal solutions. Rather, it aims at enhancing capacities of participants to understand their local context and to be able to choose a suitable mix from the different options available based on reliable and consistent data, identification of problems, framework conditions and respective objectives.
