Risk Informed Urban Development: Territorial governance schemes for addressing systemic risks in intermediary cities

Connective Cities side-event at Africities Conference 2022

Join us on May 19th at the Connective Cities side event at Africities 2022!

The 9th edition of the Africities Conference (May 17-21, 2022 in Kisumu, Kenya) puts the spotlight on the Role of Intermediary Cities of Africa in the implementation of Agenda 2030 of the United Nations and the African Union Agenda 2063 and aims to address major questions of urban development. Africities mobilises communities and local authorities in African countries, as well as financial institutions, civil society groups and development partners at continental and international level.

The race against time to determine solutions to highly complex urban challenges is no more critical than in Africa. Until 2050, 90% of the global urbanization will be experienced in Africa and Asia. Despite Africa’s low contributions to GHG emissions, the continent remains the most vulnerable to hazards e.g. climate change.

Therefore, the session Risk Informed Urban Development: Territorial governance schemes for addressing systemic risks in intermediary cities, co-organised by Connective Cities and the Global Initiative on Disaster Risk Management in light of their working group on Risk-Informed-Urban-Development will showcase actionable ideas and strategies from different development and geographical urban contexts, e.g. Quelimane City-Mozambique and Kisumu City-Kenya and be complemented by panelists from South Africa, Germany and UNDP advocating for sustained investments in urban governance towards achieving resilience to risks and ensuring the sustainability of development.
