Green spaces under pressure of use

Strategies and Solutions - An Event of the German Institute of Urban Studies

Many cities are responding to the growing demand for residential and commercial space by building new buildings on previously undeveloped sites and by increasing the density of indoor areas. For this purpose, green spaces are often used, which as a result are no longer or only to a limited extent available for recreational purposes, biodiversity, the formation of fresh air and as retention areas. At the same time, the pressure of use on the remaining urban green areas is also growing. Frequently, the demands of different uses and different user groups compete.

Against this background, the question arises as to what possibilities there are to safeguard green spaces in cities and what minimum quantity of green spaces is required in our cities? It also needs to be clarified which requirements are placed on the urban green space in order to meet the increasing pressure to use it in the growing and densified city, and which possibilities exist to improve the multifunctionality and multiple use of green spaces.

These and other aspects (e.g. the effects of increasing usage pressure on care and maintenance requirements) will be discussed in the seminar using concrete examples from municipal practice and incorporating the experience of the participants.
