About Dr. Christo Marais

Dr. Christo Marais is the former Chief Director for Natural Resource Management (NRM) Programmes at South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment. His expertise lies in translating economic and environmental theories into practice, focusing on ecosystem-based disaster management and nature-based solutions for droughts, fires, and floods.

His recent projects include:

  • Mainstreaming biodiversity stewardship in South Africa
  • Strategic planning for large-scale restoration programs
  • Mentoring African cities on nature-based flood mitigation solutions
