Join our virtual Insight Session on Wednesday 2 August 2023 from 13:00 - 14:30 CEST as we explore the transformative potential of Urban Green Islands. We will start the discussion with an overview of the concept, key principles of Urban Green Islands, current challenges and potential solutions. Drawing on the expertise of Dr Aleg Sivagrakau, inspiring success stories and tangible results achieved through this innovative approach will be presented.

Further, learn how industrial brownfield sites can be revitalised to expand green spaces, promote biodiversity and harness tourism potential in the post-industrial Ruhr region. We look at the case of Königsborn Colliery in Bönen (North Rhine-Westphalia/Germany) - a coal mine at several sites in the Unna district. Today, nature has reclaimed this abandoned industrial landscape and is home to an astonishing number of 582 plant species. These areas surpass the biodiversity of some small German towns and are an important refuge for endangered ferns and flowering plants on the Red List. Since the end of mining and the iron and steel industry in the 1960s, large parts of the Ruhr region lie fallow and offer unique opportunities for transformation.

Join us and learn more about the journey from industrial wasteland to thriving green oasis. The virtual event takes place on the Connective Cities Community: https://community.connective-cities.net/en/node/1381
