Background Information

SDG 11: “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable” aims to ensure access for all to adequate, safe and affordable solid waste management services and to achieve environmentally sound solid waste management practices. World Bank (2018) describes the waste management sector as a gradual process and changes should be introduced incrementally if the sector is to improve steadily achieving organic growth. In the policy document Municipal Solid Waste Management: A Roadmap for Reform for Policy Makers, special attention is paid to the building blocks of a well-functioning waste management system, including reliable data, legislation, institutional framework, financing, public communication and participation, management capacity, and operations. The intention of this roadmap is to provide a simple list of key issues and their sequencing that may be used by national and regional/local authorities in the conceptualization and implementation of municipal solid waste management reforms.

The Event

In 2021, Connective Cities organized sessions in effort to address the challenges that cities/municipalities face in effort to provide solid waste management services. As aforementioned, this is a gradual journey and can be achieved by understanding the challenges but most importantly gaining knowledge on how to deal with the challenges. The event series will address some of the challenges including how to deal with illegal dump sites, opportunities in waste to value and how to mainstream the informal waste collectors into the system. The knowledge shared is based on practice from peers in the region.

This upcoming event will mainly focus on waste-to-value processes and promoting recycling of waste in effort to reduce the waste taken to the landfills.

Connective Cities’ Sub-Saharan Africa Network

In July 2021, Connective Cities officially launched the Sub-Saharan Africa Network of urban practitioners. The overall objective is to provide a platform for exchange of solutions and foster continuous learning among the members within an informal framework. This is being done in the context of thematic working groups.

We kindly invite you to become a member of our Connective Cities Community (https://community.connective-cities.net/en) and join the working groups of your interest!
