City diplomacy forms an important part of international relations of local governments. The project “Urban Diplomacy Exchange” aims to assist German municipalities and their partner cities in the USA to work together on democracy-building and promoting sustainable development within the framework of the 2030 Agenda.

The German Association of Cities (Deutscher Städtetag) and the Service Agency Communities in One World (SKEW) will organise a series of dialogue events and expert exchange trips. The cooperation is intended to establish knowledge exchange, to strengthen relations at the municipal level, and to advocate for municipal interests at national and international level. Participating cities receive ongoing advice and support.

Applications are welcome from all German cities that maintain relations with a US partner municipality or are interested in a municipal partnership cooperation. We expect the willingness to actively collaborate on issues related to the 2030 Agenda and city diplomacy.

As part of the project, a virtual Mayors Roundtable will take place on 10 March 2022. Mayors from German and US cities will discuss the role of cities in strengthening democracy.
A virtual partnership conference with expert exchange on topics related to the 2030 Agenda is scheduled for mid-May 2022.

The project is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.
