Insight Session: Building Climate Resilience

Lessons from Flood-Prone Urban Regions in Central Viet Nam and the 2021 Floods in Western Europe | Insight Session, 12 July 2023 11:00 - 12:30 (CEST)

Flood risks are already high and increasing across many urban regions across the world as a result of rapid urbanization and climate change, manifesting in adverse direct and cascading impacts on people, infrastructure, economy, and the environment. This raises the question how to tackle the growing risks of climate change, including how to adapt to climate-induced extreme weather events and how to ensure climate-resilient development.

This virtual Insight Session on ”Building Climate Resilience: Lessons from Flood-Prone Urban Regions in Central Viet Nam and the 2021 Floods in Western Europe” will reflect on global mega-trends affecting flood risks in urban regions, and share experiences from flood prone-urban regions in Central Viet Nam and recent catastrophic floods in Western Europe for understanding and managing flood risks and impacts both in the short- and long-term.

In doing so, our talk will draw on findings from the FloodAdaptVN project (“Integrating Ecosystem-based Approaches into Flood Risk Management for Adaptive and Sustainable Urban Development in Central Viet Nam”) and the “UNU Climate Resilience Initiative”. We aim for an interactive session to share knowledge and facilitate discussion on how to shift the focus from risks to resilience.

Speakers:

  • Dr. Michael Hagenlocher & Dominic Sett, United Nations University – Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), Germany

The conference language is English. Registration

This virtual event is a joint initiative of Connective Cities and the Global Initiative on Disaster Risk Management
