Pearls on String - Revitalization of the Old Town of Chiang Mai, Thailand

Municipal experts from Bremen and Mannheim and a local planning team develop a sustainable mobility concept

The historic old town of Thailand's second largest city has great potential for sustainable tourism. However, increasing private car traffic, noise and poor air quality are affecting the quality of life in the inner city districts. From 9 to 11 January 2019, two German municipal practitioners from Bremen and Mannheim assisted a practical workshop on sustainable mobility planning for local planners which took place in Chiang Mai. They advised the local planning team in formulating concrete action programmes.

The result of the workshop is the concept "Pearls on String". Participants were able to identify points of interest for tourists in the old town, which are to be linked together on pedestrian and bicycle-friendly routes. In addition, a number of approaches to traffic planning such as access restrictions for individual traffic, an attractive road design and the promotion of electric mobility were discussed. The Chiang Mai Municipality supports the project and plans to launch a pilot area in the near future.
