Risk-Informed Urban Development in the ECOWAS Region

Workshop series starts on 18 March 2025 in Lomé, Togo

Following a successful call for expressions of interest, cities from Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo have been selected to participate in the workshop series on risk-informed urban development. This initiative is being implemented by the Resilience Initiative Africa (RIA) in collaboration with Connective Cities. The Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development is involved as an urban practitioner from the German side.

Key Focus Areas of the Project Ideas

The participating cities have identified various thematic priorities, including:

  • Adaptation to climate risks, particularly droughts, floods, and coastal erosion
  • Strengthening early warning systems and disaster risk management
  • Sustainable urban development and infrastructure measures
  • Engagement of civil society and awareness-raising initiatives

Next Steps

The first workshop will take place from March 18 to 20, 2025, in Lomé, Togo. Experts from government, academia, and civil society will come together to exchange experiences and develop innovative solutions for enhancing urban resilience.
