Transformation of the old town into a traffic-calmed urban district

Expert assignment in Chiang Mai, Thailand

The international cities’ platform Connective Cities and its initiators, the German Association of Cities (DST), Engagement Global gGmbH / Service Agency Communities in One World (SKEW) as well as the Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) would like to invite two German urban practitioners to participate in an expert assignment to Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The expert assignment is a follow-up to the local project workshop on „Low Carbon Mobility Planning“ that took place from 12th - 14th July, 2017 in Chiang Mai. A local stakeholder workshop was conducted in February 2018 to verify the initial assessments and mobilize local support. Information about the local project workshop and the stakeholder meeting can be found <link internal-link internal link in current>here. During the course of the workshop, the idea to transform the historic centre of Chiang Mai into a traffic-calmed (car-reduced) urban quarter was developed and enriched by experiences of good practices from Leipzig and Berlin/Germany as well as on policy level. The presentations comprised a variety of practical approaches such as access restriction schemes, car-reduced city centres, as well as strategic cycling development and the promotion of e-mobility.

To further support local practitioners in Chiang Mai with regard to the formulation of a concrete project proposal to search for possible financial support, e.g. from a third party, Connective Cities intends to organize an expert assignment for 5-6 Days (including travel) to Chiang Mai. Two German urban practitioners will advise a local team of experts of the Municipality of Chiang Mai’s urban planning as well as traffic planning departments, which will be responsible for planning and implementation of the envisaged project. An experienced local counterpart from the city will facilitate the assignment and the advisory process on-site.

Objectives of the Expert's Assignment

To develop a holistic action plan on how to effectively reduce the number of private cars inthe historic city center of Chiang Mai and improve conditions for non-motorized transport incl. walking and cycling (short- and long-term activities and projects)
