"From challenges to solutions – how to improve integration of climate change aspects into urban development instruments, strategies and initiatives"
Climate change presents cities with new challenges. Adaptation and mitigation measures must be planned and implemented. Therefore, it is necessary to adapt existing urban development instruments and strategies (i.e. urban development planning, land-use planning and zoning plans) to address newly emerging climate change challenges in conjunction with corresponding guidelines and financing opportunities.
From February 14 – 16, 2017, the GIZ Cities fit for Climate Change Project (CFCC) conducted with support of “Connective Cities” (CC) the International Dialogue Event on learning exchange and on further collaboration addressing current challenges “From challenges to solutions – how to improve integration of climate change aspects into urban development instruments, strategies and initiatives” in Durban, South Africa.
Together with its partner cities Durban/South Africa, Chennai/India, Santiago/Chile, the CFCC aims to develop integrated climate-friendly urban development instruments and strategies that enable a new type of sustainable urban development. In this way, CFCC supports innovative solutions for urban planning and makes cities ‘fit for climate change’.

The workshop brought together urban and climate change adaptation practitioners from the partner cities Santiago, Chennai and Durban as well as from the German cities of Hagen, Nuremberg and Stuttgart and from the Swedish City of Malmö.
The good practices contributed by the participants provided a basis for a lively exchange of experiences on projects and innovations in climate sensitive urban development instruments and strategies. In addition, in small peer-to-peer consulting sessions, current challenges were discussed and solution options were jointly worked out. Thus new knowledge was commonly co-constructed and innovation was promoted at local level in the area of low-carbon and resilient urban development.
CCFC as well as CC are projects of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. CFCC is implemented on behalf of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), while CC operates together with the Association of German Cities (Deutscher Städtetag) and Engagement Global on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
