Solid waste management

Project workshop in cooperation with the "Municipal know-how for host communities in the Middle East" programme

23 municipal practitioners, 10 of them from Germany and 13 from Turkey, concretised project ideas on the topic of solid waste management during the two-day workshop. Previously, the participants had visited the depot of AWB Cologne and the biogas plant of RheinEnergie.

The participants, who represented a total of 3 municipal companies, 11 municipalities and 2 local government associations from Turkey and Germany, are now planning to deepen the partnership-based cooperation on topics such as biogas plants, waste collection, public awareness or the recycling of building rubble. The aim of the cooperation within the framework of the "Municpial know-how for host communities in the Middle East" programme is to strengthen the municipalities Hosting refugees through exchange and mutual consultation.

The content of the project workshop followed on from earlier Connective Cities events in Kocaeli, Northrhine-Westfalia und Hamburg. Project ideas have already been formulated at these events and have now been deepened. The implementation of the project partnerships can be supported through the framework of the IKKN financial packages.

The participants were welcomed by Christoph Preuß, speaker of RheinEnergie. The municipal company not only made its conference centre available as an event location, but also its knowledge on the operation of biogas plants. The partner city Istanbul, represented by the municipal administration and the municipal company İSTAÇ A.Ş, is currently building its own biogas plant and is interested in exchanging information. Further participating municipalities were Mezitli (district of Mersin), the district office Tempelhof-Schöneberg (Berlin) and the Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR); Karesi (Balikesir), the city of Schwäbisch-Hall and the district of Schwäbisch-Hall; Mersin and Oberhausen; as well as Kayseri and Krefeld.
