Energy-efficient cities are key to promoting a low-carbon future in the MENA region. In particular, reducing energy consumption for heating, cooling and lighting of buildings is an integral part of municipal strategies to achieve the climate goals.

According to the latest ranking of the Arab Future Energy Index (AFEX) on Energy Efficiency, Tunisia, Jordan and Morocco are leading the region in terms of enacting EE measures based on four evaluation categories: energy pricing, policy framework, institutional capacity, and utility.
From an economic perspective, energy efficiency is the most cost-effective means of reducing the energy intensity of the economy and promoting a low-carbon future. The rationale for supporting EE in MENA is indeed clear since reducing energy consumption is becoming increasingly more attractive and necessary from economic and environmental standpoints.

The upcoming projects workshop is a follow-up to the dialogue event held virtually in May 2021. The dialogue event brought together municipal representatives and urban practitioners to showcase and discuss good practices and develop new project ideas through peer learning. This project workshop aims to further develop these project ideas by revising strategic approaches with the support of relevant regional and international experts.

A virtual session on Financing municipal energy efficiency projects will be held on the 13^th, followed by the opening session and technical peer advisory session on the 14^th and the 15^th September.

We encourage the participation of two experts from the municipal departments with a possibility of being accompanied by a partner from the civil society, private sector or academia. With this call, we are looking for German and regional experts who can support and advance the proposed project ideas with their expertise.
