Strengthening the function of intermediate cities in the subnational context

Dialogue event

Latin America is the most urbanized continent in the world and its cities still keep growing, less in population but especially in spatial terms. Within the urban system intermediate cities have gained special relevance. Their spatial growth – due to expansion of industrial and business zones and new human settlements – involves very often several municipalities. In this regard, intermediate cities play an important role in promoting economic development and delivering public services. Moreover, inter-municipal cooperation and regional planning aspects are to take into account.  This regional dialogue event seeks to explore experiences and success factors of intermediate cities in regard to their function within the sub-national region, focusing on a) urban planning b) improvement of delivering public services and c) local economic development.  Good practice examples serve as basis for an exchange of experiences, supplemented through peer-to-peer consultations as well as the development of joint project ideas.
