Connective Cities invites you to participate in the online ad hoc event on “Waste management and digitalization” on 28 May from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. (CEST) and optional peer-to-peer consultation from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. (CEST)
The amount of waste is growing worldwide due to increasing urbanisation, consumer patterns and industrial production, leading to an increasing pressure on waste management systems. The digitalisation of the waste sector offers many ways to optimise the processes of waste collection, recycling and reuse. Municipal and regional stakeholders profit from technologic advantages, ranging from automatized waste disposal facilities over intelligent bins to AI supported data analysis - or trainings of the (globally often informal) workforce. The cooperation of public and private stakeholders, such as IT start-ups, can create mutual benefits.
Nadeera is a social enterprise that helps instil circular economic practices by offering an integrated, inclusive and innovative solid waste management platform to residents and public and private institutions in Lebanon, UAE, and KSA. They design rapid, fit-for-purpose and citizen-centric material recovery masterplans, and deploy Nadeera’s technological solutions to support stakeholders, including municipalities, in implementing developed waste management frameworks, waste tracing and verification mechanisms, and provide operational oversight. Additionally, Nadeera provides citizen outreach, educational, and behavioral change campaigns. Michel Mokbel, operations lead at Nadeera, will present its success stories.
PD Dr.-Ing. habil. Abdallah Nassour, Professorship in Waste and Resources Management at University Rostock has been working on substantial solutions in waste management and circular economy for 30 years. In addition to working with German municipalities, international knowledge transfer is also an important part of his work. As he is also active in the MENA region, he will contextualise the previous presentation and compare developments in the MENA region with those in Germany. As he is also supporting a project in Rwanda in capacity development, he will also shed light on the digitalisation of the waste sector for waste management in the African context based on the experiences in Germany and MENA region.
The inputs will be followed by an optional one-hour peer-to-peer consultation session. The tried-and-tested Connective Cities format offers participants the opportunity to discuss the challenges communicated in advance. The consultations will be held in break-out sessions.
The working language of the event is English. In order to attend the meeting, you can subscribe here. Please specify in the registration form what specific expertise you need. Invited experts are both German and international municipal practitioners, active in waste management.
