The annual report prepared by the Secretary-General in cooperation with the United Nations system provides an overview of global progress towards the 17 Goals of the 2030 Agenda, on the basis of a selection of indicators for which data were available as of April 2017.

On page 13, the progress of Goal 11: "Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable" is described. Among others, the report makes clear that "The safe removal and management of solid waste represents one of the most vital urban environmental services."
