As part of the activities of the working group “destination management organization and product design in tourism”, Kufranja municipality in Jordan has hosted a workshop on ecotourism and designing touristic trails’. The workshop was attended by key actors in this field including representatives of the tourism ministry in Ajloun governorate, the Royal Society for Nature Conservation, and Bookagri.com which is an agritourism experiences and destinations development company. The tourism expert, Hanane Haber, has provided an overview of the principles of establishing sustainable tourism in Kufranja municipality that is known as “the city of oxygen”.

This was followed by a presentation of the head of urban planning division in the municipality, Anwaar Bani Salem, in which she has presented the results of mapping potential trails in the municipality and the vision to develop the infrastructure for agritourism in Kufranja. Participants were provided firsthand experience of the potential trails during a field visit that was conducted by the municipal team.

The second day of the workshop was hosted by the Royal Society for Nature Conservation in their academy in the biosphere of Ajloun. The head of eco-tourism development, Osama Hasan, has shared critical insights from the experience and learnings in the field of sustainable tourism and nature conservation in Jordan and the MENA region. This peer exchange was key in providing constructive feedback to the municipal team responsible for the design of the trails and the development of the vision for ecotourism in Kufranja.

The working group “destination management organization and product design in tourism” is part of Connective Cities network in the MENA region. Within its framework, several workshops and insights sessions were held since August 2023.
