The war in Ukraine shows once again how destructive armed conflicts can be. Entire urban and rural areas have been destroyed. Nevertheless, municipalities must ensure basic services on the ground while fending off further attacks. The Corona pandemic has not yet been fully overcome, and the invasion by Russia has already triggered a new crisis. In addition, climate change remains a threat and is likely to exacerbate an already complicated set of circumstances.

Connective Cities and its partners are attentive to the challenges faced by municipalities and are organising online workshops to discuss experiences and available technologies to address the pressing issues.

One of these workshops will be held on 10 November 2022 from 13:00 to 16:00 (CET) on the topic of construction waste management in crisis areas. This topic is based on the crisis experiences Germany has gained in the post-war years and through the natural disasters of recent years. The most recent example of the latter is the flood disaster that occurred in the Ahr valley in 2021.

During the event, the following questions will be discussed:

- What are the experiences and lessons learned in dealing with waste in crisis areas?

- What are the advantages and disadvantages of mobile construction waste processing plants?

- What approaches/strategies on this issue already exist in municipalities? What measures can municipalities take immediately?

During the event, special attention will be paid to the current needs of Ukrainian municipalities. In particular, it will be discussed how they can use existing technologies for reprocessing and disposal of construction waste.

Speakers of the following organisations will give a presentation on the mentioned topics during the event:

  • Association of Ukrainian Cities  - "Destruction waste: capacity of local governments"
  • Municipal Waste Management Company, Kharkiv, Ukraine - "Destruction Waste Management"
  • CEMR Committee on Municipal Development Cooperation, Germany - "Waste Management in Crisis Regions - Ahr Valley”
  • City of Zaporiyzhzhia, Ukraine

The working languages of the event will be German, English and Ukrainian. Interpretation will be provided.
