Cultivation in semi-arid environment - the Urban Gardening Workshop

Insights into the working group biodiversity and environmental protection of the network MENA

As part of the activities of the “Biodiversity and Environmental Protection working group”, a virtual workshop was held on the 11th October 2021 focusing on promoting  urban gardening in the MENA region. In addition to developing a road map of the working group’s activities, the participating municipalities have discussed local strategies to promote urban gardening as well as challenges that hinder mainstreaming this concept. Furthermore, a good practice example from Al-Karak municipality in Jordan was showcased. Al-Karak municipality has established a modern plant nursery to promote urban gardening in public spaces, which also contributes to increasing green areas in the city and improving air quality. The participants were also introduced to the Connective Cities Labs that was presented by Fatina Toukan- Connective Cities project advisor.

This workshop followed a field visit on the 7th of October to Al Majdeya Village in the Jordan valley, during which representatives of Jordanian municipalities learned about permaculture and how to overcome challenges of promoting agriculture in water-scarce environment. This field visit was organized by the UN Habitat and the National Agricultural Research Center in Jordan.
