Enhancing the active mobility is an important element for the successful mobility transition, not only for attractive and liveable cities. While bycicle traffic is already in the focus of the federal government, pedestrian traffic is often neglected due to the low results during traffic analysis', measured in kilometers.

Some States, however, already engage in enhancing pedestrian traffic. They support municipalities which develop pedestrian traffic analysis schemes and close-distant mobility concepts, implement mobility acts or provide financial supports for disctricts and communities which aim to implement pedestrian freindly infrastructure. However, more flexibility and support from the existing legal framework is required.

That is why the Federal Environemnt Agency assigned the German Institute for Urbanistic with the task to analyse the "Main Features of a National Pedestrian Traffic Strategy" during an extensive dialogue process with selected experts. The result is published with this report for public discussion.
