South East Europe Network: Working Group "Sustainable Mobility

Review of the Meeting on June 8, 2021

Urban practitioners from Lviv in Ukraine, Kruševac in Serbia, Kutaisi in Georgia, and Banja Luka in Bosnia and Herzegovina working on projects of mobility discussed in-depth Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMP). During the meeting, Ms. Jelena Nikolić, representative of Kruševac, Serbia, presented their SUMP and allowed participants to take a closer look into the preparation phase of project realisation.

The main themes of the session were:

  • Existing national and international guidelines
  • Data collection process
  • Visions and challenges
  • Available cooperation possibilities
  • Traffic Safety
  • Infrastructural measures

While covering all aforementioned topics, the participants could discuss common challenges and ask questions to gain more insight into themes that were most relevant for them. Additionally, a Q&A session was held in which Ms. Nikolić gave insights into how their city dealt with the demands of politicians for short-term, visible results. Participants also shared their experiences when it came to convincing drivers to reduce car use.

Mr. Andre Stuer moderated the virtual event. He presented the agenda and gave the floor to Ms. Jelena Nikolić, Architect and Advisor for Sustainable Urban Mobility and Energy Efficiency in the city of Kruševac, presenting the cities Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan.

Results

During this meeting, representatives of four municipalities shared their ideas and observations on SUMP. In addition, several common challenges were discussed, such as awareness-raising and lack of commitment from all stakeholders.

At the end of the workshop, the participants agreed on a schedule of upcoming meetings. The next sessions will further allow the urban practitioners to dig deeper into the identified challenges. Then, with guidance from expert support and recommendations from one another, the member of the working group will develop a general solution scheme.
