Caring for Our Common Home: Sustainable, Healthy, Just Cities & Settlements

53rd International Making Cities Livable Conference

At the IMCL conferences world leaders, city officials, practitioners, scholars and students in urban design, planning, architecture, health policy, social sciences, urban affairs, transportation planning, urban anthropology, and environmental science gather to exchange experience and ideas to improve health and well-being for all, and to ensure the long term sustainability of the natural and man-made environment.
The theme of this conference is inspired by Pope Francis’ Encyclical, On Caring for Our Common Home, a profound, wise and visionary letter to all of us who are concerned with making our cities healthy, just, sustainable, and livable. The Pope presents principles that must guide urban planning, community participation, rebuilding community, placing children, elders and the poor first in our planning, quality of life, valuing the common good, rejecting the consumerist approach to city planning, building in harmony with nature, and maintaining a cultural sense of identity.
Climate change, pollution of the earth, and rapidly increasing global inequality are connected to the way we build cities. In Rome, we will share knowledge of the effects of the built environment on the health of humans and the earth; evaluate neoliberal and alternative planning procedures; foster interdisciplinary collaboration on real sustainable and equitable practices; and define a universal charter for the improvement of the built environment.
