Connective Cities Webinar: Resource Recovery from Electronic Products

The 5th Connective Cities Webinar on Solid Waste Management in 2017 held on Wednesday 18th of October

The 5th Connective Cities Webinar on Solid Waste Management in 2017 will be held on Resource Recovery from Electronic Waste and takes place on Wednesday, 18th October 2017. The webinar will focus on approaches and challenges of recovering resources from E-Waste, giving the opportunity to learn and exchange based on a theoretical overview as well as two concrete experiences of e-waste recycling and recovery projects from Ghana and India.

Presenters
We are fortunate to have Mr. Federico Magalini (E-Waste specialist, Managing director, SOFIES), Dr. Deepali Sinha Khetriwal (E-Waste specialist, SOFIES) and Mr. Markus Spitzbart (Head of program Sustainable Management and Disposal of e-waste in Ghana, GIZ) as presenters at the webinar.

Background
Over 40 million tonnes of electric and electronic waste (also known as e-waste) are produced worldwide every year. In many parts of the world for example in Africa or India, you can find enormous and heavily polluted electronic waste dumpsites damaging the environment and people shifting through them. The opportunity is that if disposed of correctly, the recyclable components can be recovered for reuse and hazardous materials can be treated appropriately. E-waste products contain a variety of material that can be collected for resource recovery.

Content
This webinar will provide insights on electronic waste recovery starting with a theoretical overview touching upon the following issues:
- types of electronic products and priorities for recycling;
- process and components of E-waste treatment;
- contribution of E-waste recycling to circular and green economy.

In addition, practical experience from concrete E-waste recycling/recovery projects in Ghana and India will be presented as bases for a discussion on approaches, success factors and challenges of resource recovery from electronic waste.
