World Habitat Day 2018: Metropolitan spaces committed to managing solid waste

Towns and cities around the world celebrated the day by taking action towards a sustainable and innovative management of urban solid waste.

The United Nations has designated the first Monday of October of every year as World Habitat Day. The theme for World Habitat Day 1 October 2018 was Municipal Solid Waste Management.

Solid Waste Management is a global issue that affects everyone. According to the World Bank, by 2050 the world will be generating 3.40 billion tonnes of waste annually, a drastic increase from today’s 2.01 billion tonnes. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Agreement and the New Urban Agenda have identified solid waste management as a key issue to be addressed. Poor solid waste collection and disposal lead to serious health problems and to polluted air and water.

A change in public attitudes, sustainable and innovative solid waste planning and management as well as increased recycling and reusing are measures to help cities to improve the current state of solid waste management and save money to become #WasteWiseCities. Governments of major cities and metropolitan spaces are putting in practice innovative methods to ensure the sound management of the waste in urban spaces.
