Greening Cities and Promoting Urban Green Growth

1st Connective Cities Asian Dialogue Event

Overview

Representatives of municipalities, business and science from Asian countries and from Germany met in Chiang Mai from the 4-6 November 2014 for the first Asian Dialogue Event of the International Community of Practice for Sustainable Urban Development, Connective Cities, to exchange experience on “Greening Cities and Promoting Urban Green Growth”.
The Asian Development Bank maintains that Asian cities are facing the key challenge of coupling their rapid growth with greater resource efficiency and equally with efforts on poverty reduction. Since urban infrastructure that is built today defines resource consumption over the next few decades, intelligent solutions are required. For this purpose, cities need both strategic planning instruments as well as technological innovations for urban mobility, renewable energies, municipal water supply and waste management in order to reduce urban environmental pollution, establish environmentally compatible production cycles and adjust social imbalances.
What such innovations and instruments can look like in practical terms was discussed by the roughly 30 experts participating in the event who came from India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Thailand, the Philippines and Germany. They presented case studies related to their professional activities, ranging from resource-efficient services in the transport sector (Chiang Mai, Thailand) through steering urban land consumption and the prevention of urban sprawl (Cebu, Philippines) to the development of ecological production methods (Solo, Indonesia). The examples of application in German cities related, among others, to aspects of urban structural change (Dortmund) or a climate-friendly redevelopment of the InnovationCity Ruhr (Bottrop), stimulating discussions on comparing initiatives and practical exchange of experience.
The subsequent excursion brought the participants to a strongly polluted river in Chiang Mai where wastewater management is to be improved by means of civic participation.

Results

The participants formulated innovative project ideas, such as the development of methods to make use of waste material to generate energy, or on strengthening communication skills among urban planners. These ideas are going to be developed jointly by the practitioners who will involve in project workshops in the future. Connective Cities will support further networking of the municipal experts and promote cooperation through training courses, virtual project workshops and mutual project consulting.
